Why You NEED to be on TV
I’ve been on TV more than 700 times in 12 years. I’m going to tell you exactly how I was able to get my first segment and how I’ve mastered media appearances.
Why would you bother going on TV? You might be thinking, “that seems like a lot of work. I’m just going to build my Instagram audience.”
I’ll admit it, Instagram IS a very great place to be right now. But you have to understand something about today’s business environment: You have to have authority.
Why aren’t people responding to your emails or buying your stuff? How come you aren't getting speaker invites? I can answer those questions: You haven't earned your audience’s respect yet because you haven’t built up your authority.
Authority comes from three places.
Expertise
You’ve got to be successful at something. A couple of years ago, you may have gotten away with just building a sales funnel page. You could be an expert at being an expert with no results. That’s really hard today because there’s so much noise. We’ve been inundated with people who are experts are being experts. You can’t expect people to follow you when you say you can solve a problem without ever actually demonstrating that. You NEED expertise.
Social Proof
Social Proof. People are going to judge the snot out of you, based on whether or not people engage with you. If you’re brand new, don’t worry, Rome wasn’t built in a day. You’ll get there, but you need to work at it. It is VITAL.
Think about it: You get an offer from someone, and what do you do? You check out their social media. People are doing the exact same thing with your product and your social media accounts.
For example, if a social media agency only has 100 followers on Twitter, does that communicate something? Absolutely.
You CAN build a business with zero followers, but it’s a LOT harder. So it’s important that we build our social proof and we demonstrate it.

Associations
Finally, number three is your associations. When you are quoted by Cnet or TechCrunch or when you’re seen on stage, you’re staying visible. More importantly, you’re building authority.
Here’s the deal: You know when people put those “as seen on” logos on their website? Why do they do that? Because the logo shows they were invited into an exclusive club – not everyone has been quoted by the Washington Post.
By having those badges displayed, a person is showing that the Washington Post (or whatever other news sources) trusted them enough to quote them.
Although people say not to trust the media, we do. We trust them as tastemakers just as we’d trust a big influencer.
