Not doing podcasts? You should be.

Here’s how you can do that!
What is a podcast?
Maybe somehow you’ve missed the growing trend of podcasting or you’re not really sure what it’s about. Think about the radio shows from back in the day. Some were news, some were special interest. There were dramas and of course, shows Little Orphan Annie.
Podcasts are similar to old school radio shows, only the topics are more widespread. There’s really a podcast for everyone. If you’re not familiar with podcasting, I’d encourage you to check out our two shows, The Thoughtful Entrepreneur and Authority Confidential.
More importantly, podcasts can be beneficial to entrepreneurs.
Why be a podcast guest?
It’s 2019 and being a brilliant advertiser just isn’t enough anymore. You can start a lifestyle business and make decent money – maybe even six figures, but eventually, you’re going to need to build your brand.
In order to do that, you’re going to have to build yourself up as someone with authority. You need to serve your audience and the more audiences you can serve, the better. That means more people are going to appreciate your wisdom and your experience.
Why aren’t you doing podcasts? You’re going to get a TON of good stuff out of being a guest. You’ll build your influence and your brand as a subject matter expert. Mainly, you’ll build your authority.
The more podcasts you do as a guest – and I’ve done more than 150 – the more you’re going to get out of it.

Getting on a podcast
So you’ve decided maybe being a podcast guest is a good idea (I’m telling you, it is!) – now what?
First of all, don’t set your sights too high. You’ve got to honor the ladder of media authority. If you come to me and say, ‘Josh, can you get me connected with this podcast,’ and it’s a very top level podcaster, we’re going to have to take a look at your background. How many podcasts have you been on? Do you have a press kit? What’s your LinkedIn profile look like? Podcasters are going to look at all of these indicators of authority.
Many well-known podcasters are only interested in people who’ve created a lot of success and have earned their stripes. That includes you, but maybe not today. Can you get there? Absolutely. Will it take you a little while? Probably.
It all depends on where you’re at now. I can not stress this enough: You need to take your ego and put it in check. If you’re just getting started and you’ve never done a podcast interview, put that ego on the shelf. Go out and do like 10-20 smaller podcast guest slots.
