Philip Wong: Enhance Your Mathematical Capabilities

Thinking about developing your mathematical capabilities?

We’ve faced the truth that math is the least favorite of a lot of people. Apart from it being hard, not everyone is able to wrap their head around it. Math Trek focuses on developing the mathematical skills of students. We have Philip Wong here today, one of the founders of Math Trek.

So what does Math Trek exactly do? Instructors are sent to different locations to teach an hour of competitive math. These instructors try to go over the layers and teaching methods. Instructors teach the kids how to do these really hard math problems to prepare them for competition.

Math Trek currently about nine partners in  nine locations that carry the program. That is about 11 classes that recur every single week.

Philip Wong is one of the founders of Math Trek, a company that aspires to change the world by preparing students to become great communicators, collaborators, and creative thinkers who can also perform under the pressures of time constraints and competitive environments.

I'm Josh Elledge, founder and CEO of UpMyInfluence.com, where we turn entrepreneurs into media celebrities, grow their authority, and help them build partnerships with top influencers. So we believe that every person has a unique message that can positively impact the world. Even you stick around to the end of this show, where I'll share info on how you could be our next guest, three times a week, five to 15 minutes each learn from successful business owners and professionals. It's time to get inspired. Let's go. Alright, Phillip Wong, you are the founder at Castle Chess and Math Trek. And you and I were chatting before this conversation. And I really love what you guys have built and can you kind of explain what Castle Chess is and Math Trek and kind of explain your model there in the Bay Area.

0:58

So I'm for my first company Castle Chess, what we do is we send the instructors to different locations, and we teach one hour of chess. The first hour is lecture the second. The first 30 minutes is lecture the next 30 minutes is guided playtime. Right now I have about 50 plus partners. Some of my partners are learning centers, schools, private schools, mostly, and Montessori schools. For my match right program, right now, I have about nine partners, nine locations that carry my program, about 11 classes, recurring every single week basically follows a similar model, my instructors are sent to those locations teach an hour of competitive math, we try to go over the layers, teaching methods, that's to teach the kids how to do these really hard math problems to prepare them for competition.

2:10

And I would imagine the Bay Area specifically Silicon Valley, pretty popular.

2:16

Very popular, the slot of Indians are a lot of Chinese, they're very interested in this kind of programs.

2:23

Yeah. And so what's really cool about the model is you actually partner with the locations and so you know, they help send a bring awareness to the program that's coming to their school, I would imagine then that you have a partnership with them. So it's a great way to grow. In that you don't have to build a you probably don't have a physical location yourself do Yeah,

2:46

Yeah. I don't have physical location myself now. But yeah, yeah, this is the good thing about bit my business model is, you know, basically, I outsource my advertising, marketing to other businesses, I work mainly with businesses,

3:05

To the partners. So it's a really, it's this is a win win win, either, you know, the parents are can then. So how does the pricing work for the parents,

3:16

Um, the pricing, we typically charge the parents about 15 to $20 the location have like a maybe a minimum, like a 25 to 30% of that costs.

3:33

That's wonderful. So again, the location wins from that. So yeah, you know, what's really great is that you've actually grown this pretty quickly how you get started.

3:44

So I found that my two companies with my co-founder, Josh, and basically what I was doing before, was teaching chess already with a company at a previous company. But the business model that my previous company was using is pretty much similar to what I'm doing now that they embed themselves into different locations. So I already have experience with this model. I have been doing this for up to five years.

4:15

So

4:16

Yeah, what a great way to get into your own business where you're, you're doing the thing, and then you realize, you know, I could probably do this on my own and do it a lot better. Yeah. So it seems like your partners are really there into it. It's, it's, it's great for, you know, to be able to offer that as an additional program for an instant, you know, you know, added benefit to their students, and of course, the parents that are paying or otherwise to have their students enrolled there. So that's great. Sure, sure. Yeah. Now, you and I chatted in terms of expansion, and what a great business to grow through franchise. I mean, once you build this system out, and you prove, you know, exactly what works and how to build those relationships, and how to teach the classes and how to build local buzz and get students enrolled in it. What a great product, or what a great franchise model to then offer to other people in other markets.

5:27

Yeah, it's an excellent opportunity. Uh, well, we are accepting, like, any potential partnership with anyone who was interested state in our business model, we have a chess program, your map program. Anyone I mean, I'm very interested in any partnership. So right now, you can go to our page, maybe there's a wet in our website, if you go to the website, there's a page on French about French she's saying you can, you know, put down your email address or your number. We could definitely like contact you in a day or two about potential opportunities. Sure,

6:14

Yeah. Yeah, well go to the website, our castle-chess.com and then the other one is mathtrek.org and that's trek.org Yeah, you know what a great for someone who loves chess and or math, you know, whatever, whatever a business to be, and to be able to inspire a next generation good work with kids inspire them, you know, I've got a very my boys are both into STEM. They're both into engineering programming math, and you know, so it's this is I think, you know, in our competitive you know, market you know, you know, competitive you know, with our kids whose parents you know, we want to give our kids every year advantage and you know, to get them to experience the fun of math and being able to compete and you know and or chess you know, to use those logic skills and make it you know, create a fun environment around it. I think it's great. So yeah, build one you are the founder and CEO of castle chess and math track. Thank you so much for joining us.
