What does a product need to fit into the ecosystem? Find out on this episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur featuring Hamid Farzaneh of Alea Labs.
“If you walk into Home Depot and ask for a smart vent, everyone will scratch their head,” said Hamid Farzaneh. “The category hasn’t existed.”
The category hasn’t existed because the right product hasn’t come along to create it, he said, but that’s about to change.
“In order to create the category, you have to have the right product at the right time,” he said. “Everything had to fit right in the ecosystem.”
Just like Apple’s iPhone, Alea Labs’ smart vent seems to be the perfect fit, and Farzaneh says it could result in a 50 percent energy savings for homes across the US.
Farzaneh’s first startup was in the HVAC business. He realized that the biggest problem with the HVAC system is that it has no idea how much heating and cooling energy is needed at a given time, which is where the smart vent comes in.
