I’ve said it once, I’ll say it a thousand times: Get in the media! Not so great on camera?
You’re in luck because – despite some security issues at the bunker – Cheryl Tan has some great tips on this episode of Authority Confidential.
Cheryl is the founder of Tan Media LLC and offers business owners private or group sessions on media preparation, media messaging and media outreach. She’s an expert at being on camera and she’ll help you become one too!
She knows the value of the media when it comes to growing a business, but says a lot of business owners seem to be afraid of the camera.
“When I talk with people, a lot of times, they don’t want to even pitch the media,” she said. “They don’t want to have the result that might happen, which is: They might get a call.”
Part of it is because they don’t want to look bad or sound bad, Cheryl said.
“They don’t want to feel dumb,” she added.
She pointed out that most people are nervous in front of that camera, and that’s okay! However, anxiety can be an issue.
“Anxiety that keeps you from going forward is a problem,” Cheryl said.
One way to get your anxiety under control is to simply practice being on camera. Pick up your cell phone, turn the camera on yourself and press record. Say your name, talk about what you do, Cheryl said.
After you’ve gotten comfortable with that, try doing videos on Facebook and Instagram. Cheryl also encourages group video calls.
“Doing video more and more helps you become more comfortable,” Cheryl said.
