Lublin WideThe Importance of Publicity and Kindness in Business

In a recent episode of “The Thoughtful Entrepreneur,” host Josh engages in a thought-provoking conversation with Jill Lublin, the founder and CEO of Jill Lublin Publicity. Jill, a seasoned expert in publicity and the author of influential books such as “Guerrilla Publicity” and “The Profit of Kindness,” shares her invaluable insights on the critical role of publicity and the transformative power of kindness in the business landscape. This blog post delves into the key themes discussed in the episode, offering actionable advice and expert recommendations to help you leverage publicity and kindness for business success.

Jill begins by addressing the disconnect that has arisen in modern business due to an over-reliance on technology. While technology can facilitate connections, it often lacks the personal touch that is vital for building meaningful relationships. Jill emphasizes the joy of simple acts of kindness, such as sending a handwritten card or expressing gratitude, which can significantly enhance personal and professional interactions. She explains that her monthly “Kindness Circles” are designed to create a supportive environment where participants can connect and help one another, fostering collaboration and ultimately leading to business opportunities.

Transitioning to the topic of publicity, Jill shares her insights on what is currently effective in the realm of public relations and media visibility. She notes that podcasts have become a powerful tool for gaining exposure and connecting with audiences. Jill encourages listeners to leverage the opportunities presented by podcasts to share their messages and expertise. She also advocates for exploring alternative communication methods, including phone calls, to establish more personal connections with media professionals. By integrating the principles of kindness and effective publicity strategies discussed in this episode, you can create a more connected, supportive, and successful business environment.

We've got the spelling for that.

Speaker 1 00:01:16 It's Jill Lublin is Lublin. Com Jill, you are also the co-author of the book Guerrilla Publicity. You are the author of the book The Prophet of Kindness How to influence others, establish trust and Build Lasting business relationships. Something, Jill, that is, could cannot be overstated just how valuable that is for business success today. Jill, it's wonderful to have you.

Speaker 2 00:01:43 Thank you. Josh, I'm grateful to be here.

Speaker 1 00:01:45 Yeah, well, I'll let you kind of share an impact of the work you do and who you serve.

Speaker 2 00:01:50 Sure. You know, I work a lot with, coaches, consultants, entrepreneurs of all types, as well as people of products and services. So I really cover a lot of bases because really what I, what I've focused on doing is making publicity accessible to all people and, you know, just to do it. Well. And then I run Conscious Kindness circles, their monthly, their high level interactive and and everything I do is on zoom now so that everybody can participate.

Speaker 2 00:02:23 And that's made a world of difference.

Speaker 1 00:02:26 Yeah. So Jill, I'm talking or thinking about where we are in the world. I don't think that your principles that you're talking about have ever fallen out of favor. I don't think that they've ever not worked. But today, what I can tell you from some aspects of marketing and business and sales development, I've seen kind of a push over the past ten years, and I think we're course correcting quite a bit, where there was just kind of this easy automated numbers, just spending less time with, you know, or, you know, spending more time with fewer. What do I say, spending more time with fewer people? Kind of more of a spray and pray approach. But, you know, again, it's it's interesting. Your background is in publicity and you're talking about deep relationships. why do you believe that this is so critical today?

Speaker 2 00:03:21 Well, the truth is that we've gotten so disconnected from each other because everybody's relying so much on technology to do their jobs, to create relationships with people, to connect, that we've forgotten the personal touch.

Speaker 2 00:03:37 I mean, isn't it fun to get a card in the mail, like, wow, what a concept, you know? And and the thing about, about many of us is that we've forgotten this simple things of kindness, the follow up, the please and thank yous, the connection actually with people, and this can be done on zoom. I do it every month in my kindness circles. I'm interviewed also in publicity as well as so many of my clients are all interviewed over zoom. All of this is still taking place. It's just the how it's taking place. And interestingly enough, kindness has become a competitive edge.

Speaker 1 00:04:14 Yeah. Jill, what happens in a kindness circle?

Speaker 2 00:04:18 Oh, we get together on zoom, and, usually I have a ten minute speaker who, like, for instance, the last one, I had a 15 year old boy that I found in people magazine. They have a specific kindness issue, and I've tracked people down from that issue. And he came on. He's been doing kindness work since the age of seven.

Speaker 2 00:04:38 I'm like, I like this guy. Yeah, exactly. And and then what happens is we go into two circles. It's within an hour time period, and we actually create connections with each other for each other and to help each other. So it's been really, actually practical. People have gotten business from it. It is a an environment that fosters that support to help each other, and that's the environment I think we all need to play in now.

Speaker 1 00:05:07 prioritizing peer groups and networking groups and just, you know, being able to connect with and communicate with and help one another. And again, I'm speaking specifically of, you know, groups of other leaders. some Jill may look at that and say, I've got too many things to do. Why should I prioritize time to do that? How would you address that?

Speaker 2 00:05:33 I would address it because you're in front of I mean, my community is now over a thousand strong. so you take an hour, you spend it being in a circle of kindness, giving and receiving, you know, because both are kind, by the way.

Speaker 2 00:05:48 And and we foster that environment in the circle. so you're in a team work. Think of that like a collaborative environment. Where? Right there. Right then. Right now, we are making requests of each other in kindness and supporting each other in business. To me, that's a great way to spend time.

Speaker 1 00:06:09 Yeah. you know, since you have a background, Jill, in publicity, you know, quite a few things. what is working right now in PR and media and visibility, you know, so for folks that want to be seen and celebrated, and, and be able to attract and build their own audiences, what do you see working well right now and maybe what's fallen out of favor in your world?

Speaker 2 00:06:35 So there's a lot of things working well right now. And you are, you know, wonderfully helping people, get on podcasts. Right. Podcasts are working great right now. I think it's a fabulous way to get connected quickly to lots of people who need guests, and that is a beautiful way to start for a lot of people.

Speaker 2 00:06:56 I think that publicity is more in people's hands than ever before, and call me an eternal optimist, which I am. Yes, and what I've seen is the opportunity to really have those of us multiply our opportunities for publicity, because not only are you featured in Inc magazine, but then you live on the website and vice versa of everything you do. you know, every affiliate you're on like ABC, NBC, CBS, you know, Fox TV, all of them. You live also in multiple places. So I think publicity has actually multiplied in its effect in the opportunities and the ability to be seen, to be heard and get paid, which is what publicity does. It puts you to the front of the line up, levels your expertise and enables people to see you. So, you know, that's been really great. Because of the number of ways we can also connect with reporters, email may not be as effective as it once was. Maybe it is good reaching out on other platforms. maybe.

Speaker 2 00:08:01 By the way, picking up the phone and having people hear your voice is something that also puts you in front. So don't always rely on. Well, I've sent out, you know, 120 emails to pitch Media because they may or may not reply to that. And so one thing I found is that finding other ways to connect is actually what is better. I think that's been more thoughtful.

Speaker 1 00:08:27 Yeah. Agreed. do you mind? I'm sharing just a little bit about your book, guerrilla publicity. Who should pick that? I mean, if you're interested in this topic, go read the book. but, Jill, before we talk about the profit of kindness just a little bit more, who should read gorilla publicity?

Speaker 2 00:08:40 Everyone. If you're in business, please read it. I mean, if you need to really get your next step with publicity. And let me just say, if you're in business, you need publicity. The truth is, you're doing publicity all the time by showing up, by going out, by connecting and meeting people.

Speaker 2 00:08:59 Well, let's do it the smart way. Get people noticing who you are and uplevel everything you do by having a great message. Guerrilla publicity takes you through all of those steps and helps you each step along the way.

Speaker 1 00:09:13 Yeah. so, Jill, tell me about the impetus for the profit of kindness. And usually when we think about, I think you've juxtaposed, two things that we don't often put together. Profit and kindness.

Speaker 2 00:09:29 Yeah, well, tell my publisher that, but, you know, and and the truth is, kindness does create more profit. And I will tell you, every person we interviewed, small businesses and one person businesses and big businesses. Guess what happened when they used kindness and had it as part of their culture, their profits were multiplied. Their customers were happier, the CEO was happier, the team was happier. Whether, you know, again, small teams or big teams. So kindness did create profits ongoing. And, you know, you keep it in your culture because it's the right thing to do.

Speaker 2 00:10:08 And what happens is it magnifies all the, all the what already exists. And, and people go, oh, I like dealing with you or that company. Listen, when I owned a PR agency, which I did, I had reporters saying to me, you know why I take your calls? Coz you're nice cuz you're kind.

Speaker 3 00:10:27 Yeah.

Speaker 2 00:10:28 Good thing. Right?

Speaker 3 00:10:29 Yeah.

Speaker 2 00:10:31 And so I would tell you, you know, part of the impetus was actually something a personal friend said to me one day about wouldn't it be nice if we had a new currency, the currency of kindness, and she was just grateful that I would always be available to help her, to take her out in her aging journey. She was in her 80s, you know, and I would just make myself available. And by the way, I'm a busy person, you know, so people say to me about you not having time. The question is, what do you have time for? So one of the things I always like to encourage is to practice a conscious act of kindness every single day.

Speaker 2 00:11:10 This is easy. It's called smile at the people. When you walk past them, you know, pay for somebody's coffee behind you. Whatever it is, do small things and do them consistently. But most importantly, every day do one conscious act of kindness. It'll make a huge difference in your life and the life of others.

Speaker 1 00:11:31 What do you think is going on emotionally? I'd love your theory on this. Like what's going on emotionally, spiritually when we do something for somebody else, even if it's done in secret, like they don't even know. So there's no like, we're not doing it because we want to receive all the gratitude or the praise for doing the nice thing we do and the nice thing, and then we just move on and and like, what's going on inside of us when we do that, do you think.

Speaker 2 00:11:58 Well, I don't know about you, but I feel uplifted. Yes, yes, whether they know about it or not. And, you know, listen, if I wake up in a bad mood or it's a tough day, the best thing I can do for myself is to get outside of myself and actually help someone else.

Speaker 2 00:12:14 You know, I just listen, I, I answered something on next door, a woman I don't even know. They said she's getting an operation and needs some meals delivered. Is anybody out there willing to help her? I'm like, okay, I'll help her. You know, I was having a tough day. I just thought, well, what would be so great about helping a stranger, you know, who lives somewhere in my community I don't know or never heard of her and she needs some help. So the question is, how can you do that? Or I will go over to my physical neighbor, literally in the neighbor next door, and I will bring her a little treat or something and just say hi. She happens to be in her, she happens to be 90. And I'm like, I want to be like you when I grow up. And you know, by the way, I have so many baked goods and treats from her, I can't even count them anymore because she's always.

Speaker 3 00:13:02 So grateful for the.

Speaker 2 00:13:04 Fact that we bring up her, you know, trash that, you know, those cans at the bottom of the street. It's hard for her. We bring them up for her. Next thing I know, baked goods appear on my door. It's a.

Speaker 3 00:13:14 Fabulous thing. Yeah.

Speaker 1 00:13:17 Jill, what is the work that you do? So. I mean, can people hire you or how do you how do you serve?

Speaker 2 00:13:22 So my biggest thing I do is called a media mastery intensive. And I've been helping people with getting their name out there and increasing visibility through a wonderful online event. I do live with media who actually tells people what to do and how to do it, and how to get great interviews. So imagine actually walking away with interviews and and it's called the Media Mastery Intensive.

Speaker 1 00:13:47 Tell me more a little bit more about that. Yeah.

Speaker 2 00:13:50 So what we do is we come online in a short time focused frame of, really, I like to call it roll up our sleeves and dig in there.

Speaker 2 00:14:01 What are systems and blueprints that actually work to get media? I have a panel of media experts also that people can actually pitch. So, you know, that's the part about really being able to walk away with, with an interview. Like, how cool is that? Yeah. And we hear from the mouths of babes as I like to call you. what's actually working in media and what's not?

Speaker 1 00:14:24 Well, we've launched a couple of hundred podcasts, set up my influence, so we should probably chat about that.

Speaker 3 00:14:31 I am.
