#HACKED: Overcoming Hate Mail with John Lee Dumas

February 5, 2019

What do you do when a “fan” reaches out to tell you how much they hate you? Find out how to overcome hate mail on this episode of Authority Confidential featuring special guest John Lee Dumas. John Lee Dumas was used to getting emails from listeners telling him what they liked (and what they didn’t) when it came to his podcast EO Fire. Most of the criticism was constructive – but not all of it. “A couple days before Christmas, I got one of the most hurtful emails,” John said. It was the worst he’d received in the five years he’s been doing EO Fire. The email was full of attacks on John’s character and his professionalism. “It really hurt, you know, because I’m a human being,” John said. A lot of people would say to just ignore it and move on. John says that’s not very good advice. “I’m sensitive and I’m going to read these things,” John said. “I can’t just ignore them or forget about them.” Overcoming Hate Mail Instead of curling up into the fetal position and rocking back and forth, John decided to share the email with others. He started getting more emails – this time, thanking him for opening up about his experience, because it helped them deal with their own hate mail. His approach can fit a variety of industries – not just podcasting. “Just be transparent, be open, be honest,” John said. “Share the good and the bad. Share the pros, the cons, the wins and the failures … because that’s where you’re really going to help people.” No matter what other people say, stand firm in your beliefs and your mission. Be courageous enough to put your voice out there into the world. Not everyone is going to like you and that’s okay! Everyone that has accomplished anything of value has had haters, but they still managed to cause major changes and send a message out into the world. “Get in line with these other amazing people and be proud that you’re going through something other people have had to face,” John said. “It’s important to recognize you’re not alone. There’s going to be people out there that love you and people out there that hate you. Focus on what you can do in this world to spread your inspiration and your message and double down on that.” For more wisdom from John, listen to the episode above or on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Google Play, TuneIn or any podcasting platform!
