Trust Rules in Business

June 12, 2019

You’re a thoughtful entrepreneur, but are you a thoughtful manager? Find out from Bob Lee on this episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur.

Some part of Bob Lee always dreamed of being a writer – he just couldn’t find a compelling topic to write about. Then, through his work, it came to him.

Lee, an internationally recognized author, conference speaker and media commentator, had the opportunity to talk to hundreds of managers and employees around the world.

He spent 15 years as a senior leader with Great Place to Work® Institute. During that time he spoke at conferences and events throughout the US, Europe, Middle-East, Africa and Asia, sharing his unique insights on how and why the world’s best employers use great workplace culture to drive competitive advantage.

Through his travels, he became intrigued by a simple question: Why, even in the very best workplaces, are there pockets of deep unhappiness—teams for whom the day-to-day workplace experience is very different from that of their colleagues elsewhere in the organization?

So he set out to understand what the best managers were doing right that other managers were doing wrong. He studied feedback from almost two million employees in eighty countries around the world to better understand the manager attitudes and behaviors that have the greatest impact on how employees experience the workplace.

The Results

The resulting work – Trust Rules: How the World’s Best Managers Create Great Places to Work – achieved #1 Best-Seller status in Amazon’s International Business category within two weeks of launch and has been published in 12 separate international editions.

The organization Lee worked for had a database of 2 million people who had responded to a 57 question trust index survey. He realized that if he could work with that database, he may be able to discover what manager behaviors and attitudes had the biggest impact of the level of trust with people that worked for them.

“I expected that there would be a difference between male employees and female employees – that male employees might be more transactional, whereas female employees might be more reflective and slower to trust,” Lee said.

He also thought there would be generational differences, but he quickly discovered that that wasn’t the case.

“What I found, was that there are essentially no differences,” Lee said. “Across two million people from 85 countries – all genders, all demographics – there’s really no difference. The factors that people use in coming to their decision to trust or not trust are essentially the same.”
